My husband and I are sticklers when it comes to our lawn. When we moved into our first yard we had lawn in both the front and back yard. The lawn was in terrible shape when we moved in – there were brown spots and weeds everywhere. We tried our best to bring it back to health, but it was too far gone. We ended up putting new sod down (which was not only time consuming, but expensive!), and it looked absolutely beautiful. We took extra care to give it everything it needed to stay green and healthy, including watering daily in the summer, using automatic sprinklers that were timed perfectly.

Now that we are in our second home, we only have a small lawn. Although it was somewhat healthy when we moved in, it has quickly deteriorated. This is due, in part, to changing gardeners several times and they don’t seem too keen on fertilizing or taking care of it the way we would like them to. We just hired a new gardener and we are hopeful that it will soon be green again. If that doesn’t happen, we will be turning to TruGreen.

If you are unsure what TruGreen is, you must watch this video!

When we bought our retirement/vacation home a little over a year ago, one of the first things we noticed when we pulled up (in addition to the beauty of the house itself!), was the gorgeous green lawn.  The backyard lawn was just as healthy looking.  How on earth did they keep it so healthy?  When we moved in, we hired a gardener, but unfortunately over the past two months, our lawn looks HORRIBLE!  We were down at this house for our girls weekend last week and as I walked into my backyard, I was greeted with this:

weeds,tall, what kind of weed

oh yeah, and this:

weed,succulent

What on earth happened?  I have a feeling it was neglect.  Since we aren’t at our vacation home full-time, I cannot keep tabs on things like I wish I could.  When my gardener showed up, I took him around and asked him to get rid of these weeds immediately.  The tall ones in the first picture are Nutsedge (according to him) and I am not sure what the second one is, but it is almost like a succulent weed. Weird.  My gardener assured me that this will do the trick (whatever he used on my lawn), and I sure hope he is right. Our beautiful yard looks terrible, and the grass around the weeds is all brown.  Hmmm…it makes me wonder if the previous owners used TruGreen lawn service?

Not only does our lawn look ugly, but it takes away from the things we enjoy during Summer (which is now almost over). We love to run through the sprinklers on hot days (yes, my grown friends and I!), play badminton, and enjoy the occasional picnic. We didn’t get to do any of these things this last time, and that is just sad. I also enjoy gardening and tending to my flowers and plants. I really haven’t been able to do much of this lately because of my neck surgery a couple of months ago, but when my grass is beautiful, I want the rest of the yard to be gorgeous too. I am uninspired right now, quite frankly.

When you look around on the TruGreen website, you will find a plethora of helpful information! By using my zip code, they told me what to look out for in my area. One such alert for the month of August where I live is: “Chickweed, clover and dandelions may be starting to take over your lawn.”. Boy, they aren’t kidding!

TruGreen takes the guesswork out of maintaining a lawn. Their scientific and personalized approach will have you seeing green in no time – in a good way! I think it is fantastic to have a lawn care plan that is specially tailored for each client. It makes sense though, as not all lawns – and weeds – are the same. Nor are climates and/or weather conditions. There are also different types of insects that can destroy a lawn! Did you know that Ph.D. agronomists are responsible for developing the training for each TruGreen certified lawn specialist?

TruGreen took a survey and found that only 45% of homeowners actually know what kind of grass they have in their yard. The same is true os trees. Now I do know the names of most of my trees, but I could not begin to tell you what type of grass we have currently. This is where a TruGreen specialist can take care of things that we know nothing about. I think we will leave it to the experts!

We are contemplating moving to Oregon for retirement instead of keeping our vacation home (for several different reasons), but we are really worried about the current curb appeal of this home. It sure doesn’t look the way it did when we moved in and we have a lot of work to do before we can even put the house on the market.

If you are thinking of selling your home in Spring, you will want to take advantage of these tips from TruGreen:

  • Fall lawn tip #1: Use corrective pruning in the fall to prevent dead or overgrown plants from detracting from your home’s personality. Proper pruning in the fall can enhance a plant’s growth in the spring.

  • Fall lawn tip #2: Help your lawn breathe through fall core aeration to strengthen roots. And give lawn, tree and shrub roots a good fall feed to provide them the energy to prepare for a hard spring workout. Roots continue active growth before the dormant winter months and store reserves needed for growth in spring.
