Lately everyone seems to be interested in learning how to make homemade hand sanitizer. It is no wonder, since it is so incredibly hard to find in stores these days. I was also one of those people and decided to make my own alcohol based hand sanitizer with aloe gel recipe. It is a good feeling knowing that I have come up with a way to can keep my family safe with my own stock of handmade hand sanitizer gel. Hand sanitizer wipes are sold out everywhere too, unfortunately, so I have begun making DIY Hand Sanitizer Wipes as well!
Easy Homemade Hand Sanitizer Wipes
Each time I make a batch of DIY Hand Sanitizer, I divide it up and put it into small bottles. I then give them to my kids and my husband to make sure they have a supply of hand sanitizer with them wherever they go. Ideally they will each have a bottle for their vehicle, a bottle for their bedroom, and a bottle to keep on their body/purse, etc. Sometimes when things are a little messy though, you need more than just the gel. For me at least, I like hand sanitizer wipes in those situations.

How do you make hand sanitizer wipes?
Sizing options
Let’s begin with sizes. It really depends on your personal preferences and how you plan on using the wipes. For me personally, there are two different sizes/types that I like, and those are the two that I will be demonstrating today.
Option 1 – The 3 1/2″ x 5″ towels are the perfect sized hand sanitizer wipes for smaller hands.
For this option, stack two towels and line up evenly. Using scissors or a paper cutter, carefully cut shop towels into pieces 3 1/2″ x 5″.
Option 2 – The tri-fold 5″ x 10″ towels {pictured above} might be a better choice if you want a hand sanitizer wipe for adults.
If you are using a paper cutter, I found that it is easiest to stack two shop towels, then cut the 3 1/2″ pieces first, then cut the 5″ pieces. For the folded towels, fold into two 5″ pieces, then fold them into thirds so they fit into the plastic bags.
Wet or dry options
You can also choose whether to add the hand sanitizer to the towels now so they are ready to pull out of the plastic bag and use right away, or you may want to keep the towels dry and add hand sanitizer to the dry towels as needed.
Option 1 – Wet wipes: For the first option above (wet towels), put the cut towel pieces in the plastic bag and gradually pour sanitizer in. Put a little in and work it around towels, then add a little more.
Repeat steps until clothes are wet but not soggy. There should not be excess liquid in bag. Use them as you would regular hand sanitizer wipes – they can be pulled out and ready to use right away. The beauty of the blue shop towels is that they are strong and hold up really well, and should not rip with average use.
Option 2 – Dry wipes: Pieces can be put into the plastic bags and left dry until ready to use. You would just carry a bottle of hand sanitizer with you like you normally would, and apply some hand sanitizer on the towel as needed.
You can fit about 8 individual towel pieces in each plastic bag, or about 5 of the tri-fold wipes in each bag. Make sure you seal them up well so they don’t leak. If the outside of the bag gets a little sticky, simply rinse it with warm water and dry with a towel. When you are using the tri-fold option, make sure you fold them and stack them individually so that they are easy to pull out of the container/plastic bag you store them in.
Apply labels if desired. You can use masking take, or you can make your own labels and use clear packing tape to attach the label to the plastic bag. I wouldn’t recommend gluing the label on the bag, or run the risk of the ink running if the gel gets on the label.
I love how compact these packs are! They are small, thin and just really convenient.
Hand sanitizer wipes that can be used as DIY antibacterial surface wipes!
These wipes are really versatile – you can even carry these around with you to use as antibacterial wipes when you are out and about! You can use full size shop towels, fold them in quarters and put them in zip-lock sandwich or zip-lock quart size bags.
NOTE: If you do a lot of crafting and you don’t have a paper cutter, I highly recommend the one shown below. It is lightweight and so easy to use.
