Jack Costume

When my son was in 1st grade, we wanted to make a really fun costume for him. The store bought costumes seemed so boring, so we decided that we would make a  Jack from Jack in the Box costume! This took some planning ahead, as we had to paper mache the head. We used a blown up beach ball and did several layers (letting them dry in between).

After the Jack head was completely dry and sturdy, my husband cut out holes for his eyes (we didn’t especially want my son to trip over things he couldn’t see 🙂 We used blue spray paint  on two round pieces of  mesh/screen and attached them in each eye-hole (don’t laugh) from the inside.

Next we made a yellow hat and black nose out of thin plastic material (purchased at a plastic store). We used a hot glue gun to attach them. We made a template and spray painted the red mouth.

My son as "Jack"!

When we arrived at school in the morning, jaws dropped as the kids and teachers saw my son. There was pointing and staring and it was awesome!

After school, I took my son to the Jack-in-the-Box drive-thru. As the cashier was taking my order, my son leaned forward and the cashier just started laughing. Imagine a big Jack head in the drive thru! He called the other employees to the window and we all had a good laugh. They handed my son a big laminated picture of Jack, which was pretty neat.

Making the Jack from Jack-in-the-Box Halloween costume was a blast…and a family project. It doesn’t get better than that!

  1. When my son was 4 years old we made a Thomas the Tank Engine costumer for him using copier paper boxes, paper towel rolls, and a paper plate. He and I spent several evenings working on it and we had a lot of fun. It was sturdy enough that a friend’s son was able to use it the following Halloween.
