Looking for an unusual baby name?
Some parents find it easy to name their children, and already have names picked out long before they are born. For others, finding the perfect name is much more challenging – there are so many lovely names to choose from! Like Daisy for example, which is my daughter’s name, it’s also why I named my website https://whooopsadaisy.com/ and it’s very personal to me. However, here, we take a look at 20 unusual baby names for parents who are looking for something a bit different and unique for their special little boy or girl.
Unusual Boy Names
Gulliver
This Irish surname has become more and more popular as a first name after being used by a few celebrity couples for their sons. Whilst it was once only known through the book and later film ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, it is now totally acceptable, and even trendy, to use as a first name for a baby boy.
Ludovic
This name is the Scottish version of Ludwig, although it is not a common name in Scotland, the rest of the UK or the US. It also comes with the super-cute nickname Ludo.
Osten
This name which sounds similar to Austin, is of Norse origin and has the meaning ‘happy’. It’s thought that this unusual name is given to only one or two babies per million, so the chances of meeting another Osten are slim!
Raoul
This unusual sounding name is French is origin, known as Raul in the Spanish form, and Ralph in English. It’s rare to find a name with 3 consecutive vowels in the middle, so this name is perfect for parents looking for a name to stand out from the crowd.
Thibault
This is another name which is French in origin and means ‘courageous people’. Whilst common as both a given name and a surname in France, it is mostly used as a first name in the US. There are a few alternative spellings of the name, such as Thibaut and even Tibbo.
Whistler
This is a very uncommon name, which is English in origin. Occupational names such as Archer and Harper are becoming very popular and trendy. Whistler is a newer addition but expect it to rise in popularity over the next few years.
Unusual Girl Names
Annora
This name is Latin in origin and means ‘honor’. An alternative version of the name Annora is Honora, and you can give your little girl the cute nickname Nora!
Jessamy
This name is a nice alternative to more common Jessica and Jessie. If you like this name, you might also like to consider Jessamine for a nice twist on the name Jasmine. The name Jessamy means jasmine flower.
Laurie
This unusual name is similar to the more popular names Laura. The name has Latin origins and means ‘from the place of the Laurel leaves’.
Pippa
This name has become more popular recently thanks to Kate Middleton’s sister, although it is still relatively uncommon in the US. It can be used as a name in its own right, although it was originally a condensation of Phillipa.
Saskia
Saskia is a Dutch name which means ‘Saxon’. The name is quite popular in Europe, but is much more uncommon in the US.
Tulip
Floral names are as popular as ever, but if you are looking for something a little different from more common flower-themed names such as Rosie and Daisy, why not consider the rarer Tulip. Tulip is becoming a more popular choice with celebrity parents, although still uncommon overall.
Unique Gender Neutral Names
Denali
Denali is the name of a national park in Alaska which is home to the tallest mountain in the US, and the name makes a great, uncommon choice for both boys and girls.
Guthrie
This Scottish surname is becoming more and more popular as a unisex first name.
Neo
Short names are popular with parents who have long last names, or want to keep things simple for their child when they are learning to talk and write. Neo is a contemporary-sounding short name, made more popular after the Matrix character, but still relatively uncommon.
November
Day and month names are still popular, although there are few which work for both boys and girls, with the majority being more feminine. November works well for a boy, and to make it more feminine for a girl you can choose a cute nickname like Novi or Nova.
Quincy
If you are looking for a name for your baby which begins with Q, Quincy is the perfect choice! It was once thought of as a boy’s name, but it is becoming more popular with parents of baby girls too. The name is French-Latin in origin and has the meaning ‘estate of the fifth son’.
Rebel
This is a great name for baby boys and girls which needs little explanation! It has been more popular recently thanks to actress Rebel Wilson, but the name works just as well for little boys too.
Tay
Taylor was once a popular name for both boys and girls, but it has been declining recently in recent years. Tay can be thought of as a shortened version of Taylor, and it is also the name of the longest river in Scotland – where the name originates from.
Zephyr
This mythological name is perfect for parents looking for a unique name beginning with Z. It comes from the name of the Greek god of the west wind.
