My Name is Leona ReviewAs parents, many of us can relate to how difficult it can be to choose a name for a baby. Perhaps we may even mentally prepare ourselves for an onslaught of criticism for the name we chose. But regardless of other people’s opinions, we love the name and it feels right.

But how does your child feel about his or her name? Do they love their name as much as you do? I cannot imagine naming my daughter anything different. So, I hadn’t considered it until we read a new book titled, “My Name is Leona” written by first-time children’s author Carol Gahara Harris.

This book is about a lovely little girl named Leona who is not particularly fond of her unusual name. Packed with sweet illustrations and a sense of Leona’s sincere curious nature, it is no wonder My Name is Leona stole the hearts of the judges of the Mom’s Choice Awards and was awarded the 2013 Gold rating. My Name is Leona also received the Bronze Medal for Best First Book by Book by the Moonbeam Children’s Awards! That is huge!

I adored how relatable Leona’s story is – to all ages! After we read the book, Luv and I talked at length about her name, and why we chose her name. You see, The Mister and I decided that our first born {for both genders} would take on family names from his and my side. She is named after my maternal grandmother and my mother-in-law. Bugsy is also named with a nod to our families.

Luv’s Thoughts:

I think it’s a cool book. Leona chooses a name for her cat. The cat’s name is Cabby. It’s a cute cat. She chose it special. Leona loves her name now after she talked to her dad, she didn’t like it before. Now her name is part of the family tree! I got my name from our family tree. I’m named after my Momma’s grandma! I think I’d like her if she were alive…

Giving Back

My Name is Leona was recently celebrated at a book signing with a portion of proceeds benefiting Nino Salvaggio ‘s Charitable Foundation for Children in Need, in the author’s hometown of Clinton Township, Michigan. In December, My Name is Leona is set to be shared with hospitalized children at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. Finally, there will be a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital held at local restaurant J. Baldwin’s Restaurant, also in Clinton Township – this date is yet to be announced. I love seeing so much good surrounding a fantastic children’s book!

  1. What a nice concept for a book. I’ve never heard of a book that covers the topic of a child’s chosen name. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Expecting grand-daughter any day now, and parents are having a tough time deciding on name for her. Will be recommending this book to them tonight.

  3. I really enjoyed Luv’s review!! My son is also named after the families. He likes his name, but I was never very fond of mine as it was the butt of many a teasing rhyme growing up. So I think this is a great book for kids!

  4. This makes me think of Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, which is one of my favorite children’s books:) I’d like to read it!

  5. I think it’s a great book. I myself was about 40 years old when I found out why I was named what I was named. I just thought my mother found it in a baby book of names and liked it but actually I was named after one of her good friends daughter. She like her name so much that she wanted me to be named after her. I think everyone’s name has a story and I think this book is a great way to bring up the subject.
