Make It #BetterTogether with Quaker

How many of you have heard the “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” phrase? I’m pretty sure that all of us have heard it, at least, from time to time. It is great that so many people have caught onto that saying and take the time to grab a bite to eat before beginning their day. Unfortunately, from there, things get a bit off track. Yes, breakfast is important but, more often than not, we tend to forget that the phrase means “healthy” breakfast is important. For the sake of time and ease, many people opt for the quicker, less healthy breakfast options just because it is easy to do so. Now, while I may be guilty of that here and there myself, as a mom, I do not want my children to follow in the quicker is better routine. Well, at least not when it comes to food.

Morning (500x369)

I got quite lucky with my little ones because they are wonderful eaters. They pick and choose the healthier options over the quick junk nine times out of ten. Ever since they were wee little babies, one of their favorite food choices was oatmeal. As they got older (and Mom & Dad got fancier), their love of oatmeal only grew. Now that the cooler weather is upon us, oatmeal has made the rounds on our daily request list. Seriously though, who doesn’t love a nice, warm bowl of oatmeal on a cool autumn day? I know that I’m certainly a sucker for it. And to top it all off, add a tall glass of milk to the mix and you’re all set! After all, the two do go better together!

Better Together

Recently Quaker (my all-time favorite oatmeal brand since childhood) sent me a wonderful compilation of goodies to get our days and these cooler months started off on the right foot.

Having been the leading brand of all things oats for over a century, choosing Quaker is certainly a no-brainer. Aside from the sheer deliciousness of it, I love how this long-time family friendly brand promotes healthy eating and family bonding. The recipes passed down through generations, waking up on cold and snowy mornings to be greeted by a smiling face an a hot bowl of oatmeal, family baking sessions with oatmeal dishes on the menu, and even going as far as sprinkling oats across the front lawn to give Santa’s reindeer a tasty snack on Christmas Eve… Quaker has created its own niche in my childhood. And, coincidentally, has made its way down to my own little ones.

This fall Quaker, in partnership with The Kroger Co. Family Food Stores, is donating $25,000 to Feeding America through its Tweet for a Cause initiative. Knowing that consumers everywhere have enjoyed the brand through generations past and, still, for generations to come, Quaker is gathering the masses in their efforts to raise awareness for this cause. Wanting to promote quality family time and make things #BetterTogether, we want you to jump on board with the greatness that is Quaker and the love that is family.

What is your family’s favorite oats and milk recipe or dish? Do you opt for the classic hot bowl of oatmeal with a tall glass of milk to wash it down or do you get fancy with your Quaker and whip up a delectable treat for all to enjoy?

The Quaker Baked Autumn Apple Oatmeal with Raisins dish is a delicious favorite in our home. Having, both, Quaker Oats as well as milk, this dish is high in protein and would certainly make for an amazing start to your day.

Quaker Recipe (500x477)

The Quaker website has a wonderful list of recipe ideas that you can choose from but the most frequented one in our home is one that has been passed around for quite some time now. I remember enjoying it as a child and, now, I enjoy preparing it with my own children. Of course, this tasty little number is none other than our all-time favorite… oatmeal raisin cookies!

Chewy-Goody (the kids named this one) Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of light-brown sugar
  • ½ cup of granulated sugar
  • 3 cups of Quaker Oats
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. of cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. of salt (omit if using salted butter)
  • ¾ cup of softened butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp. of vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • 1 ½ cup of raisins
  • **Add a ½ cup of chocolate chips or walnuts if you want to jazz things up a bit!**

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350˚ F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Set this bowl aside until later.
  3. In another medium sized bowl, combine the granulated sugar, light-brown sugar, and the butter. Slowly add in the wet ingredients – milk, egg, and vanilla – and mix until smooth.
  4. Add the previous flour mixture to the bowl of wet ingredients and beat until thoroughly combined.
  5. Hand stir the raisins and Quaker Oats into the mixture until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  6. Place the batter by tablespoons (or two if you want larger cookies) on a well-greased or parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Be sure to space the dough about 1-2 inches apart
  7. Bake for 12-18 minutes or until golden brown. Rotate the sheet(s) halfway through your baking time to assure even cooking.
  8. Once the cookies are done, remove the sheets from the oven and place the cookies on a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Serve them warm or store and save them for enjoyment later!
  10. And don’t forget to top it all off with a nice, tall glass of cold, delicious milk!

My family and I had a blast creating (and enjoying!) our delicious treat just as we always do but what makes it even sweeter this time around is the inclusion of the Quaker #BetterTogether campaign. By simply snapping a quick photo of our goodies and uploading it to social media to create awareness for Feeding America and encouraging time spent together, families in need around the country will have the opportunity to enjoy the very same deliciousness that I have with our Quaker creation.
